Are Kindergartners Old Enough to Blog?

Last Fall a number of teachers from my school attended a workshop on blogging with Sharon Davison, a Kindergarten teacher at the Allen Brook School in Williston, VT. We came away from her presentation convinced that we wanted our students blogging as well and soon all our third graders had their own active blogs. Not only did Sharon offer compelling reasons to blog with young students, she stepped us through how to set up the blogs and communicate with families so that they became completely comfortable having their children's writing online. Here is the slide show Saron used during her presentation and here is an an interview with Sharon about blogging with her students. Take a look. What do you think about students having blogs, especially young students? Can you think of any compelling reasons why you might want to have your own blog, or have your students blog?

  1. I like the concept of students blogging as a part of the reflective experience of learning.

  2. I have been wanting to have students blog for years. Class Scribes always seemed like a good idea. Maybe this year....

  3. I think this a great way for students to use the internet in a positive, constructive way and to learn more about what it means to be a digital citizen. In some of the higher grades, I could see great benefit in allowing students to comment on each other's posts and generate greater discussion.

  4. I would like to see students have a wider audience for their reading and writing. Many of our students are excited about reading and discussing books, but they struggle with writing down their ideas. This would create an authentic space with students around the state.

  6. I love the idea of class blogs - and I think we could do it with kids at any age... Wondering - what's the age requirement for students to have their own blogs?

  7. Kindergarten students might enjoy blogging because they can chart their literacy progress, or find other creative ways to do classroom assignments on a blog. They could have other students comment and collaborate on their blogs to communicate ideas.Teachers want to blog to have a record of events for parent conferences or to include the class in a collaborative activity.
